Title Analysis - Se7en

First of all, the first thing that you notice when you watch the title sequence fore Se7en is the droning reflecting sound of just loud noise. This could mean that there is something that is lost. The flipped and back to front text of who produced the film makes the reader think that there is something wrong even by just the way it is shown. If we see a person hanging upside down, it isn't normal and we would be concerned. This is what this opening sequence is trying to do. The writing that the text is in almost looks like it has been scratched by a certain pen giving the audience a feeling that this film will go against everything considered to be normal.

The next thing that I picked up on is the cut where it focuses on two hands that seem to be riddled with arthritis or some sort. The wonky fingers suggest that the actual content of what is in this film, is not right and this intrigues the viewer to carry on throughout. As you can see from the picture of the dodgy hands, there is a line going straight though the middle of them. It overlaps the thumbs at one point and this could mean that they want to be deleted. You have fingerprints on the ends of your thumbs, and this could signal the want to lose identity and individuality. With the line being red, this also signifies danger to the viewer. The shadows in the corners make the frame look mysterious and puzzling. Over time the shadow on the left starts to move and we get the idea that it is a book turning it's pages. This is because of the shape of the sillhoutte it leaves behind.

In my opinion this film is trying to make the viewer be on edge by even just the opening sequence. This is shown when a silhouette of a razor blade is shown. The fact that the opening sequence is using silhouettes makes me think that the producer wants us to THINK that something is being shown, without it actually being shown. The buzzing sounds that you hear in this cut also adds tension to the audience. It puts them on edge, as it sounds like an electric razor.

The next thing that I picked up on was the scratching in the actual film tape. The people producing this obviously had a certain type of style they were going for. With is being scratched on one frame, it makes it hard to recognise. With the thing that has been scratched in it saying D-35, it makes the audience think that the person who has scratched it in, is really religious. It sounds to me like a bible reference. It also makes me think that every film reel that has been released of this will be different as if the film reel has been scratched physically, not every reel will be scratched identically. This in a way adds to the obscurity of this film. This makes the audience think that the person that is doing all of these things is crazy.

They do the same thing again but change the colour of the thing being shown on the scratched film. The writing on the tape is now flipped, so it looks like it has been written backwards, making the viewer be a little bit confused as it shown very fast.

Getting rid of identity, you think that you would just go to court and change your name, right? Wrong. Getting rid of your fingerprints is the new way to do it. Or so it does in this film. It shows you the gruesome process this person goes through by using the razor we had seen silhouetted earlier to scrape the ridges of their identity off. It makes the audience cringe as the dirty fingers do the deed! We hear screaming as the end of this cut is shown. This may show that something bad is happening and we link screaming with being terrified.

The next thing we see makes us think that we are going to see something horrible when in actual fact it is just a teabag being put into a cup!

The next thing we see looks sharp and dangerous, but when brought out into perspective it is just a notebook and some cardboard. The fact that the audience thinks that it is something more sinister shows that the producer has created suspense rather well. We also see some fingers coming over which seem to have mini bandages on the ends of them to cover up the fact that they have just been made unidentifiable.

Any normal person would write with one line on one line on a notepad. But no, this person doesn't. In the next part we see a person writing with three lines on each. This is enough to make any person watching this think what the hell are they doing?! It makes the viewer think into what this person could be. In my opinion it would either be a stalker or a murderer as no one who is normal, thinks like that.

We even see a odd image on screen which shows 2 pens writing at the same time. This could show two parts of the person doing this action. This could link to someone who is mentally crazy. And from the things that we have already seen it would be a perfect description.

Photographs are being shown to be developed, cut out and collected. This is not a normal ritual that one person goes through unless it is their occupation. In this case it looks like this is a very obsessed person doing something weird for their own means.

The next thing that i picked up on was that this title sequence has been made to be very religion orientated and is heavily related to the seven deadly sins. This is shown when we start to see signs like ENVY written on parchment, GREED on notebooks and IN GOD WE TRUST being focused upon. This makes the audience feel uneasy with everything that they have already seen. It gives them an ominous feeling.

In this we see ENVY written again, upside down and back to front. This itself is a sign that something is not right. Envy is something we are told not to have, in the seven deadly sins.

As any normal american will know, this is suposed to say IN GOD WE TRUST. Later we see the word God being cut out and removed... This could mean that the person doing all of this weird stuff, does not like God.

This is a notepad which says GREED at the top. In the seven deadly sins, being greedy is mentioned. To be greedy is classed as a sin.

In this shot, we see the person crossing out the word pregnant, like it is not acceptable. This person is later seen to be scribbling out words like transsexuals and intercourse.

This next part is important to the audience as we see the person crossing out over the eyes of a photograph of a boy. This could symbolize the crossing out of their identity and ability to see things clearly. Or it could mean that the person is envious or greedy in wanting their body/organs. It suggests that the person wants that part of the person in the photograph to be deleted. Just like the words he had crossed out earlier.

Straight after this shot, we see another shot of this photograph, matched in the place, but with line allover the photo, so it is hard to recognise what is is anymore, but with us seeing what had already happened, it suggests that the person who had crossed the person out, has killed him. This is a deadly sin.

We get a clue that he is dead by the next frame. Even though it is still small, it is a subliminal message. This reads 'Death'.

In some of the next shots, the next thing we see that really stands out is a photo of something in the back of this little boys head. It distresses the audience and makes them feel uncomfortable. It makes them have an insight into what the rest of this film will be about. It makes them feel uneasy.

Another thing happens to make the audience feel uneasy. We see a person pulling out what looks to be a dirty needle from the inside of his finger, when in actual fact the person is only cleaning it. But with seeing all of these gruesome and tale telling photographs and messages earlier in this title sequence we guess that there is going to be something that will make us cringe happening. We can almost feel the pain when this is shown.

As we saw earlier, this person was crossing out peoples eyes in photographs.. This has happened again, but whilst we see this, we also see the person putting what seems to be a strand of hair into something to keep it safe. Like he is collecting people, and their identities. We also see two people in the background of this looking like they are being tortured. This makes the audience feel for the two people and wonder what is going on.
