Review Number 2

The Prowler (1981)

Now this is going to be easy. Where do I begin?! The film is about a war veteran who returns mentally scarred and decides to kill a happy couple in the garden at a Graduation Party. Then, 35 years later, he returns. Or does he?
The new killer is clad in the same uniform, with the same weapons – a large blade I can understand, but a garden fork? A strange and completely unrelated weapon choice for an ex-soldier, don’t you think? Anyway, he decides to bump off many minor characters, instead of stopping at 2 like the original killer who just wanted revenge, and starts throwing roses everywhere.
The film started with a black and white documentary of ships bringing back the soldiers and I just couldn’t understand it. By the end of the film, its relevance was no clearer to me. Then, after another 10 minutes or so, the first characters finally die! But I must say, however, that their acting was appalling. A high school drama student could have died more convincingly.
I had such high expectations for this film, and it let me down so much it got to the point, after seventeen minutes of suspense music, 2 fairly good-looking teens snooping around - who you just knew weren’t going to die anyway - and “The Prowler” flashing up on the screen every two minutes, that I began wishing they were dead. But they just wouldn’t die!
I will admit that it made me jump in certain parts, but it never turned out to be the bad guy who snuck up on them and it was always the same, drag it out for about ten minutes and then, “Boo!” “Oh, it’s just you.” After about 3 times, I was screaming at them for making stupid decisions and not calling the police sooner. It was pathetic.
It is a shame the death scenes were ruined by the acting because the special effects were amazing. The way you actually get to see the masked murderer sawing into the woman’s neck is brilliant and the earlier death of a young man getting the small sword straight down through his head is also expertly tackled. However, I do think he fights for his life a little too long to say it went straight through his brain and turned his eyes the wrong way out.
This film is so slow and the story has been done to death. There is no sense of originality and the acting is pretty bog standard, apart from when they are dying which is just horrendous. Tom Savini’s incredible prosthetics and special effects were absolutely astounding, but alas, not even that could bring this film out of the deep, deep, dark abyss called failure. I’m sorry but 2 stars is all I can give and if the sheriff’s head hadn’t blown off in such an unexpected and humorous way at the end, it would have been a push to give it 1.
